President’s Ponderings

Greetings to you all from Melbourne!

I have had a very relaxing couple of days driving and staying in Edenhope visiting my brother Laurie and his wife Wendy.   And now I am spending a few days in Melbourne with my sister Christine until I drive to Mildura next Tuesday.

Party, Party Party!                                   With sister, Moira

In Mildura, as Stage Manager for the next Rotary Conference in March next year, I will be working with Penni Hamilton-Smith and DG Tim and other committee members doing preparation and ground work for the conference. However, the show must go on, so here are my somewhat brief notes for this week.  I trust you all had a long weekend that was as good as mine.  Mine was awesome!

For you all, next Monday 14th October we have Bryn Williams returning to speak on a completely different topic.  That of mental health of which he has a wealth of knowledge to impart.  The theme is Lift the Lid on Mental Illness and is of course our annual Hat Day. Come prepared with a Hat and a Story.

...and a donation to give to Rotary health!.

It is a partners’ night but also note that it is also committee night although meetings will be confirmed as advised by your Director.  (Maybe your partners would like to adjourn together for a glass of bubbly downstairs while you meet with your committee)..

Be active in your club and attend your committee meeting so that you have a say in the running of the club. Everyone is appointed to a committee.  Attached is a copy of the committee structure if you are uncertain about your role.

On Monday 21st October our District Governor Tim Klar will be doing his official visit.  It will also be a partners night and we would love to see a great attendance.  The members of board will be arriving at 5pm for a special board meeting with DG Tim Klar in the Library of the hotel.

That is all from me for now but I have asked Dan to include in this Newsletter an update of his Shelterbox activities in recent weeks...

I will miss you all on Monday.  Grant Andrew will be standing in for me.

Have you chosen the best hat to wear on Monday?

Yours in Rotary
Susanne Marie   President

In the past couple of weeks I have been able to support other clubs in District 9500 and 9520 in promoting Rotary's commitment to Shelterbox.

On 1 October several clubs around Morphett Vale showcased their activities and contribution to the community at an Information Night.  Held in the Christie's Beach Rotary Hall, we exhibited our SB wares.

On Saturday 5 October over 5,000 motor enthusiasts attended Serafino Wines in McLaren Vale to view the annual muster of the national Chrysler Restorers Club. The Rotary Club of McLaren Vale had a monopoly on food so the BBQ snags and bacon and egg sandwiches flew off the grill.

...and here are a few shots car enthusiasts...

On 6 October, we erected a full display as part of the 90th anniversary of the heritage Semaphore Carousel. It had been bequeathed to the Henley Beach Club on condition the club maintain and operate this remarkable piece of history. The club continues to honour the commitment and it has turned out to be a very lucrative deal!

We had access to a brand new tent to erect so, as an aside, I proved that in its original, factory packaging, EVERYTHING fits into the box...tent, liner, poles, tent pegs, tool kit, sleeping bags, groundsheets, cooking equipment, solar lighting, water purification and water transport with room left over for the children's education pack!  I also confirmed empirically that it does NOT fit back in again!

DG Jane Owens and David (District 9500) Rotary Health and several clubs participated

The weather was not great but there were steady streams of people throughout the day and the carousel got a good workout.

90 years old and going strong!

The event was opened by his Excellency Hieu Van Le, Governor of SA who was very familiar with Shelterbox through his Honorary membership of two local Rotary Clubs.

There is much going on locally of which Rotary can be very proud!

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
