Club Meetings

A meeting to catch up and share family news (although not having ventured very far) and a club forum and information night were great ways to start off the year, this being a time to reflect on a difficult 2020 and plan for a more productive and exciting 2021.

Greg and Dick will have the wine at next Monday's meeting for members to collect. Anyone who was not at the meeting last week can order wine from Dick. Only about 30% of the wine has already been distributed so there is still plenty left!

Monday Night's Meeting

On Monday night, PDG Dick Wilson will introduce us to PDG (D9500) David Egan who will talk about "Rotary Going Forward".

For the past couple of years, David has been involved with a group of dedicated Rotarians discussing our option: "more of the same" or choosing another path that might herald a new way of looking at Rotary.

David will tell you all about this new direction, hopefully with thoughts about less top heavy administration, being less USA-centric, establishing clusters rather than maintaining the existing District and Zone set-up and more of a project focus.

The group has already submitted a 'pilot' project to the board of RI hoping to road-test some of their quite radical ideas.

Come and hear all about our imagined future but also bring along your own thoughts and dreams!

Heathfield PS Community Grant Put to Good Use!

Lali Pech, Secretary of the Heathfield PS Governing Council, wrote a lovely letter of appreciation to the club for its Community Grant of $1,000 for sustainability and waste management. The sum was matched by the Governing Council.

The grant allowed for the purchase of 6 waste management systems dotted throughout the school to encourage waste minimisation through recycling, composting and the promotion of "naked food" with no unnecessary containers and wrapping.

The associated, wide-ranging educational program involved all school years, staff and parents.

Year 2s became custodians of the chickens for eggs and compost, Years 3 and 4 launched a "War on Waste", and Years 5 and 6 worked with the Adelaide Hills Council to reduce the number of bins required by the school overall while ensuring the right "mix" of bins was employed.

Here's a Good Tip for Your Next Zoom Meeting!

Medical Alert!

Dr Wilson advises that yet another dangerous virus, this time from the Middle East, is loose in the community.  It appears, in particular to those born before 1960, to be wide spread already.

The symptoms of this virus include:

1 sending the same E-Mail twice.
2 sending a blank E-Mail.
3 sending an E-Mail to the wrong person.
4 sending it back to the person who sent it to you.
5 forgetting  to attach the attachment.
6 hitting SEND before you've finished.
7 hitting DELETE instead of SEND.
8 hitting SEND when you should DELETE.

This newly identified virus has been designated as the C-NILE Virus!

Many of us have already been inflicted with this disease without realising it and unfortunately the symptoms increase in severity as we age further.

...and if you can't admit to doing any of the above, you've obviously caught the mutation—the D-NILE Virus.

For Reflection as we Embark on a New Year...

We are again grateful to PDG Dick, for passing on some wise words from Jessie Harmen, RI Board Elect Member about high performance and leadership within Rotary.

1. Be strategic and make a plan. Take others with you as you go.
2. Surround yourself with capable people. Give them a job to do, then let them do it.
3. Be humble. Rotarians donate their time, treasure and talent and they deserve your support.
4. Build a culture of appreciation.
4. Stay positive. Rotarians in your districts will look to you to set the tone.
5. Be fascinated, not frustrated! Seek first to understand the 'Why?' behind the objections.
6. Keep one eye on the present, but the other firmly on the future. Your role is to build a stronger      Rotary for all.
7. Don't let the thought of leadership overwhelm you. You don't need to achieve everything in      just one year; instead, think of yourself as a strong link in an even stronger chain.

If that isn't enough, remember this: 'Your district will survive in spite of you, but it will be great because of you'

Choose great!

Stay safe, well...and COOL!

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
