President's Message

Malcolm Horton

Fellow Rotarians, family and friends.

In line with one of my goals this year, to encourage and improve inter-Rotary relationships, I have developed a connection with the President of the Rotary Clubs of Onkaparinga, Mt Barker and Goolwa.

The Goolwa President and two members attended our meeting last month to hear Dave Cockshell talk about “Donations in Kind”. Her club also placed copies of the HSAFD posters in businesses around Goolwa as well as offering volunteer help on the days. Goolwa also encourages inter-Club volunteering as we are all Rotarians giving to the community. To that end, Jane and I have volunteered on behalf of Stirling Rotary to help them out at their upcoming Open Garden Day.

A joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Onkaparinga (our daughter club) has been organised for Wednesday, 23 November, so keep an eye out for the details. This meeting will also be a partner meeting so please lock it into your diaries as it would be wonderful to see a strong crowd representing the Rotary Club of Stirling.

Imagine if all Clubs were able to pool resources in an organised way.  It is not hard to imagine what we could achieve!

On behalf of the Club I would also like to give a BIG congratulations to Pauline Annear who has recently been approved as a JP. Congratulations Pauline!

Pauline and I were present for the official photo opportunity at the new disability table we donated. It is located adjacent (NW) of the Stirling Library, so make a detour to see our club’s work in action.

A reminder that the Club's AGM will be held on Monday, 31 October.  It will be followed by a Forum and Panning Discussion. Please seriously consider sharing the load by putting your name forward to take on a leadership role in the club.

29 August, Peter Fryer

Peter who has worked with Nestle overseas and at home in a senior marketing capacity, shared insights into this worldwide, diverse and global organisation.  He described the evolution of the business into the global entity it is today and candidly outlined the trends food industry is coping with and the many challenges it faces operating in so many jurisdictions.

The many brands Nestle manages, mostly with different formulas and packaging in countries of the world.

Peter is also actively working on the Stirling Pavillion Project and was able to report that the final plans have been lodged with Plan SA, a positive acoustics report has been received and that Council is still very supportive and even, enthusiastic.

5 September, Regionalisation Pilot

In the meeting of 5 September, President Malcolm led members through RI's proposed "Regionalisation" Project designed to provide clubs, grouped in particular regions, more flexibility to design and implement structures and policies best relevant to their situation.

Two Zones, including our own, Zone 8 (Australia, NZ and the Pacific Islands), have been offered the opportunity to take part in a Pilot to see what emerges.

The objective is multi-facetted and includes, among many other pressing issues, solutions to the full gamut of challenges we face from Regional Strategies and Policies, to Membership, Communication and Collaboration between clubs.

The club was asked to vote on participation in the pilot. By a show of hands, it was clear that there was an appetite for change, and for being a part of the change!  President Malcolm, on behalf of the club, submitted our "Yes" vote.

12 September, Dr Peter Bossley

Dr Peter Bossley has just chronicled his extraordinary life in a book, spoke to the club about his lifetime commitment to preserving species under threat and, in particular Dolphin and Whale conservation.

He is currently involved in researching the Dolphins in Port Adelaide living in the
Port River which are particularly under stress at the moment.

19 September, HSAFD Final Briefing

At the meeting before the Field Days event, Greg Russell detailed for all members, their assigned roles to ensure the Hills Small Acreage Field Days event was fully staffed and all knew what was expected of them by the public and by the club.  All were asked to be 100% committed to the task at hand each day as the club had a great deal to gain from this...and a great deal to lose!

26 September, HSAFD Debrief

A sense of relief and celebration was evident following the very positive and encouraging feedback from exhibitors and the public.  Well done all that were involved!

3 October, Labour Day

No Meeting held.

Heysen Trail Trekkers for Mental Health

Last week we hosted trekkers walking sections of the Heysen Trail organised by Rotary Health to raise awareness, and money, for Mental Health.

Thanks to PDG Dick and Liz for, yet again, opening up their beautiful home for an overnight stay for 2 of the walkers and then hosting a grand BBQ for all of them including support staff.  All members of the club and their spouses were invited to attend what turned out to be yet another. terrific social event on Bickles Road!  11 Walkers (including 5 from Victoria) and 3 support staff were all housed overnight with members and friends of Rotary

The weather co-operated and we were able to introduce the best of Hills living to our guests.

President Malcolm had a L - O - N - G list of people to acknowledge and thank for their support that evening to Rotary Health.  Pretty much EVERYONE in the club had a hand in helping out this great effort in some way, from collecting, setting up and returning the chairs and tables, cooking, buying or cooking food, staffing the BBQ and cleaning up afterwards!  ...a special thanks to partners and friends for cooking up a storm of finger food, salads and AMAZING desserts.

Hot coffee was on the agenda for the early morning start.

With Thanks to PDG Dick

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
