Well, it was a successful day at Mark Higgins' place assembling the birthing kits. Thank you to all those that helped and a big thank you to Mark and Rebecca Leigh.
I really enjoyed last Monday’s talks by Ross Wall (HHS) on our collaboration with the school and Stephen Blacketer presenting his hike to Everest base camp with his son Henry.
I am off to two music festivals over the next 11 days in Casterton and Penola, so will be getting my fill of music and wine.
On Monday 20/3 we have the induction of Neil Wickens, back into our club, so until then;
Seventeen (17) members and partners gathered at Mark and Rebecca's home to put together 200 birthing kits. Two teams very quickly organised themselves. The plastic folding team mastered the technique with ease, accompanied by robust conversation. The assembling team had an assembly line organised speedily and the kits were all done in two hours.
Afternoon tea - tea/coffee and Rebecca's delicious home made scones and biscuits - was enjoyed by all. Huge thanks toMark and Rebecca for hosting and for the fabulous home-grown vegies most people took home!
Thanks to Ken Patterson and Pauline Annear for organising and running the day so well.
Meeting of 6 March, 2023
It was a lively and enjoyable meeting with the ebullient Ross Wall, Deputy Principal, Heathfield High School (HHS), leading the way with a typically enthusiastic presentation about some of the recent initiatives at HHS, e.g., the Breakfast Club on Tuesdays and Fridays, where students who may often skip what used to be referred to as the most important meal of the day, enjoy a decent breakfast.
He acknowledged the long-standing cooperation between the School and the Rotary Club of Stirling, e.g., with the annual Round Table students' presentation event. Ross' effervescent personality is tempered by infinite patience, exemplified by his being John Norris' tennis partner for many years.
On conclusion of the meeting, members of the Youth Committee sat down with Ross to discuss HHS student nominations for Rotary programs, the most pressing being the need for a student to be nominated for the upcoming Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge events aboard the 'One and All' from Adelaide to Melbourne or the return tour to Adelaide following the Rotary International Convention,
Steven Blacketer gave a fascinating presentation of his and son Henry's 'Short Walk in the Himalayas' (cf. Eric Newby, 'Short Walk in the Hindu Kush').
Diligent physical conditioning was rewarded with an unforgettable trek from Lukla ('the most dangerous airstrip in the world') to Mt. Everest base camp, 5,364 m. in altitude (Mt. Everest is 8,849 m.). The distance, at 65 km. is relatively short but the route, of course, it very much up and down, across bridges fording raging torrents, up sharp ridges, across glaciers, down plunging gorges. And time had to be allowed to acclimatise, to avoid altitude sickness.
Sensational scenery at every turn, truly awesome! The ultimate father-son bonding exercise!
NB there is no meeting next Monday,13 March, 2023, it being Adelaide Cup Day

A Stay at Home Father...

Love this Doctor!
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it. Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: Oh no. Wine made from fruit. Brandy distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up!
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two body, your ratio two to one.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain...good!
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetable be bad?
Q. Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: You crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around!
Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for figure, explain whale to me.
Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is shape!
Well... I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.
