Fellow Rotarians, family and friends.

What a wonderfully busy meeting last week.

We were all inspired with Jess’s account of her experience aboard the tall ship, One and All. Proud to have the club receive a Citation for achieving our goals for 2021-22 and then hearing about the upcoming Rotary SA and Adelaide club centenary along with the associated Peace Pole project.

Next Monday's AGM is an important time for all of you to have your say about how the club progresses. Make sure you voice your vision for the club's future and help select the management team to guide us there.

This meeting will be followed by a number social gatherings as we head toward during the end of the calendar year. These include a Bonfire Night at Dick's and Christmas Dinner at Mark's amongst others. So please look out for notification of all upcoming events.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you to continue the fellowship and great community service.

Imagine Rotary

How are your Raffle Ticket Sales Going?

The draw is, of course, NEXT MONDAY at the AGM by Josh Teague, Shadow Attorney General.  Deadline for cash and ticket stubs to Pauline is Monday night OR BEFORE Monday.

Centenary of Rotary in South Australia

On Monday evening we heard from Heidi Underdorben, Past President of the of the RC Adelaide, who is heading up the District (SA) SA 100th Anniversary celebrations and those of her own club which was first chartered in 1923 and held its first meeting in 1924, coinciding fortuitously with the next Rotary year.

A signature project for the Centenary is to raise some $300,000 to fund two PhD candidates to address the high prevalence of kidney disease in remote Indigenous communities.

A number of special events will held later this year and next including a gala luncheon on 24 August at the Adelaide Oval (SA's 100th anniversary) and later in February for the 100th anniversary of the grant of a charter to RC Adelaide.  All members are invited to attend.

Heidi then introduced Tracey Wallis, a member of the District Peace Pole Committee. Rotary in SA aims to have 100 installed in communities throughout SA this Rotary year!

A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth.

Each Peace Pole bears the message May Peace Prevail on Earth in different languages on each of its four sides. Introduced in Hiroshima in 1955, there are now over 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world dedicated as monuments to peace. They are central to annual International Day of Peace activities and commemorations in local communities everywhere. We have committed to sponsoring one this year.

Annual General Meeting on Monday

Please make every effort to attend the meeting on Monday.

The AGM and Planning event is perhaps the most important meeting on the annual Rotary calendar.  It is the one that sets in place the direction of the club through the remainder of the Rotary Calendar year AND BEYOND!

Consider carefully all aspects of how the club is progressing (the good, the bad and the ugly) nd what we can do better for YOU, the RC of STIRLING and for the COMMUNITY we serve.

Think, too, about how you can best contribute to Rotary, whether in committee or particular event or even in a leadership role

Our RYLA graduate, Riley Langrehr

Congratulations to Riley Langrehr on his completion of the 2022 Rotary Youth Leadership Award program.

Riley (R) is pictured here with Rob Hill (C) (Youth Director), and
Lucy Kopp (L) (District 9510 Rotaract Chair and who was also sponsored by our club
to attend RYLA last year)

Riley will give a talk on Monday, 7 November about his RYLA experience; something to look forward to!

Hills Fire Preparedness and Response

Greg Russell (our Disaster Management Coordinator) and Danielle Clode (a community representative from Bradbury) representing the Adelaide Hills Community Bushfire Action Group, addressed the Adelaide Hills Council last Thursday to engage with Council to improve readiness and responses to bushfire events.

Background
The meeting with Council is the result of over 18 months work to establish an effective group of community organisations.

Initially it was formed after the Bradbury fire in January 2021 where Don and Donna Reid's house was destroyed but that fire raised a broader issue as it was not 'declared' under the State Emergency legislation.  As a result State Government agencies had a very limited role.

From discussions with the local community during the clean up of Don's property it was apparent that there were also major coordination gaps in the recovery process and this role needed to be filled by Council.

The initial Bradbury/Scott Creek group has now grown to become a network covering the broad area of the Hills comprising some 15 local community organisations from Charleston, Northern Leaders, Gumeracha, Maccesfield, Longwood/Bradbury and Uraidla as well as Blazeaid and Stirling and Onkaparinga Rotary Clubs.

Aim
The aim of the network is to educate community groups about bushfire preparation and recovery, to share experiences and improve responses.

A range of government and other agencies have attended these regular meetings including CFS, legal and insurance representatives, Recovery SA, the Red Cross, Tree Recovery and the National Emergency Management Agency.

The secretariat is provided by Adelaide Hills Council.

Engagement with Council
As a result of the presentation a deputation will meet with the Mayor and Council CEO in early December to discuss the development of a joint Community/Council action program.

Well done, Greg!  We will all sleep better!

Club Citation

On Monday night, PDG Jeff Neale presented a Club Citation to Stirling for achieving our ambitious objectives set in 2021-22.

PP Stephen accepted the award on behalf of the 2021-22 management team and all members.
Great effort from all!

We were also joined by Jess Hazell, who we sponsored for the Rotary Sailing Challenge aboard the Tall Ship, "One and All".  She was joined by members of her family and friends.

An Update from Hannah Kent

A former Rotary Exchange student from Heathfield High School, Hannah was sponsored by this club, at her request, to go to "somewhere with snow".

Hannah's first novel, the international bestseller, Burial Rites (2013), was inspired by her placement to Iceland, something that Rotary was only too happy to accommodate!

Burial Rites has since been translated into over 30 languages, has won a string of Australian and international awards and is currently being adapted for film by Sony TriStar.

She has since published, again, to wide acclaim, The Good People translated into 10 languages and also being currently adapted for film by Aquarius Productions.

Hannah’s latest novel is Devotion and her first original feature film, Run Rabbit Run was launched at the Cannes Film Festival 2020 virtual market where STX Entertainment took world rights.

She writes:

Rotary Exchange - a life changing experience.

I was going through some old photos for a project this afternoon, and stumbled across this picture from my year in Iceland as an exchange student.  It was taken in deep snow near Ólafsfjörður, and though twenty years have passed, I still remember this moment with such clarity I could tell you what the snow smelled like.  This was the year I decided to write for as long as I could get away with it. Iceland had everything to do with that decision.

Accessible Picnic Table

Pauline, who spearheaded the club initiative, contributed the following:

We had a beautiful sunny day for the launch of an accessible picnic table provided to the community by Stirling Rotary. We worked closely with Josh Spier - Community and Social Planning Officer, Adelaide Hills Council and Warwick Gregg from Able Access Design to find just the right wheelchair friendly table design.

This prominent laneway space is located in the heart of Stirling, opposite Woolworths in a new parklet.  The new accessible setting will enable residents and visitors who use a wheelchair to enjoy the Stirling Laneways - and other community events and food with their friends and family.

A great local initiative to be proud of.  Thanks, Pauline!

A Celebration of the Life of our Friend, Don Reid

More than a dozen club members and spouses attended what, by all accounts, was, indeed, a moving and joyous gathering of family and friends to reminisce about a life well lived.

Colin Fraser penned some thoughts about the day.

Don’s Commemorative Service was held at the Bradbury Community Hall on Saturday with some 150-200 old friends including about a dozen present and past Rotary club members and partners, sharing wonderful eulogies from Donna, son Mark from Nebraska and others plus Greg Russel’s short one about Don’s 41 years with the club and noted that that it was originally Rotary that brought Don and Donna together.

Beautiful melodic flute soloist, then  Kerry, Don's daughteraccompanied by her small musical group made a very passionate finale ending singing “I’ll be seeing you”

It was a most moving ceremony all orchestrated by Kerry who made a super human effort to make it all happen despite her very taxing health issues - a simply incredible service.

A great gathering of old friends catching up after with a drink and afternoon tea together. A wonderful day to remember Don.

For those who may not have seen this, here is a link to an ABC article about with only one example of why Don was so revered by so many.

Rest in Peace, Don.

Car Rally and Scavenger Hunt

Great to see a local club host an event for all the clubs in Area 10!  Please consider supporting this event as we endeavor, in the spirit of Regionalisation, to work collaboratively to grow Rotary and its perception within the local community.

This is not a race!  It is just an opportunity to enjoy a drive in the country following cryptic clues to a mystery destination.

Come along for a fun day together with other Rotary members and friends!

And finally...

...and a bit of nostalgia...

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
