Annual General Meeting, 30 November, 2020

An unusual setting but a great success!

Members gathered at the club's shed on the site of the Old Stirling East Primary School and Community Garden to attend the Annual General Meeting chaired by Acting President, Susanne Marie

A Quorum being declared, the business was conducted expeditiously and Officers of the Club were elected for 2020-21.

Elected unanimously to hold office in 2021-22, were:
 - Stephen Blacketer, President
  -Malcolm Horton, President Elect 2022-23
  -Pauline Annear, Treasurer
  -Michelle Lesiw, Secretary
  -John Osborne, Club Service
-Pauline Annear, Community Engagement and Outreach
  -TBD, Youth and Education
  -Ken Patterson, International and Vocational

Don Reid kindly agreed to continue in the appointed role of Public Officer.

Congratulations to all appointees and thank you for stepping up!

The meeting was followed by a Sausage Sizzle
featuring Master BBQ Chef, John Norris

Simon Jones, President of the Stirling Business Association, then delivered an informative and entertaining presentation about current issues and initiatives of the SBA to improve Stirling and surrounds and to support traders and the local economy.

Simon Jones' committee has been actively pursuing Council for funds to restore the adjacent Old Stirling East Primary School as a Community Centre and they appear to have won a significant victory with plans being developed and a commitment for financial support from the local and state governments. Simon was also instrumental in getting the Community Garden established on the same property.

Another major project in his sights is to to get a pavilion (clubrooms) built on the Stirling Oval.  Apparently, this is the only sports oval in the area without one!  He asked that our club and members actively barrack for the initiative with members of the community and with potential funders and politicians at every opportunity.

Monday, 7 December, 2020  (A Welcome return to the Stirling Hotel)

Chris Sedunary of the CFS State Operations Centre, will explain the fire danger index, alerts and warnings, how a building burns and the phases of a fire and the preparation needed.

We will also be asked to help Assoc. Prof. Delene Weber, Environmental Sciences, UniSA with a research project.

They know delivery from an experienced CFS Officer and delivery through VR are both effective but need to benchmark the outcomes of both before using VR to scale up delivery more widely.

The content of the talk by an informed CFS Officer and the survey questions are identical to that of the virtual reality version so the results can be compared.

Rob Hill will act as Chair for the talk and John Norris will preside.

Sculpture for Interiors and Gardens IV Closes on a High!

What an incredible ending!

Although interrupted unexpectedly mid-week by COVID, we were able to open up for the final Sunday which actually turned out to be the best day for visitor numbers and, importantly, for sales.

That encouraged Tim and Jan to explore the possibility of extending our lease of Stangate House and Gardens by a week to try to get in another weekend to make up for the four days lost to COVID.  The National Trust granted the extension, the Rotary Insurance was amended and a revised COVID Safe plan was approved in short order.  The local papers and the radio stations (including ABC 891) along with updates on our website and Facebook pages ensured a record turnout on both Saturday and Sunday.

The site was a hive of activity Sunday evening and Monday morning as teams of club members dismantled the Shelterbox tent and all the exhibits before returning the plinths, banners and signs to storage in the shed in, yet another, convoy of 4x4s, utes and trailers!  Neil Wickens who worked so hard to support Tim and Jan in the lead up to transport and paint all the plinths, also returned a truckload of plinths generously loaned to us by Fabrik in Lobethal.

The lottery was won by (surprise, surprise) Dick Wilson...probably because he bought the most tickets in support of Rotary!

PDG Dick Wilson receiving the prize painting Petrel Cove
                                          generously donated by Carla Blair,
a long time supporter of our sculpture exhibition.

Tim and Jan extend a HUGE thank you to the members of the organising committee and to the Board and members of the Rotary Cub of Stirling for their incredible support in setting up, catering for the VIP opening, invigilating and for bumping out...an incredible team effort!

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
