Last Monday's Meeting

Jeremy Arrascaeta of Angler in Stirling, recounted the roundabout way he ended up selling high quality and sustainable freshly caught fish locally.

Originally trained as a chef working throughout Europe and SE Asia, he  ended up in Kangaroo Island after a Google search for "Australia" and "Kangaroo".  The search result came up with Kangaroo Island but he found, to his disappointment, that there were no direct flights!  After a couple of weeks in Adelaide working at an Italian restaurant, he finally made it to Kangaroo island but lost his job and home in the bushfires that devastated the island.  Upon his return to Adelaide, he landed in Ironbank where neighbours, Sam and Mandy, were in the process of opening a unique, ethical fish shop in Stirling.

Since joining them in 2019, Jeremy has not looked back and has completely embraced ethical sourcing of the product.  His passion for cooking and the ethos of sustainability came through loudly in his talk to members.  Explaining that fish was too often marketed under non-specific and generic terms, it was important, he emphasised, to ask sellers 1) What species (of whiting for example)?, 2) Where it was caught?, 3) Who caught it? and 4) Who processed it for sale? Honesty and full disclosure were vital to protect the wild fish stock and to provide value and quality to consumers.

Next Meeting

Unfortunately our guest speaker for next Monday, Simon Jones, President of the Stirling Business Association is unable to attend after a fall last week which has resulted in several broken ribs. At short notice Pauline has been able to call upon a friend she has been intending to ask as a speaker for some time now. Terry Clark has a wealth of topics he could talk about ranging from Woomera and all things space, Maralinga, and cactus culling to name a few, but his favourite and intensely personal topic is 'Rocking Horse Tribute to WW1 Digger'. We can't say anymore without giving too much away!

Shed Tidy Up

John Osborne is looking for a couple of people to help him do a quick tidy up of the shed and caravan at 9:30 on Monday morning.

Nothing major but the Adelaide Hills Council Health Inspectors will visit the shed to check out  the caravan and food storage areas at 11:00am and we want to make a good impression!

Call John on 8390 1443 to offer to  help or just show up!

Bunnings BBQ

At short notice we have been offered an opportunity to host the BBQ on Saturday 31 July.   Please consider volunteering to take on a 4 hour shift shift as we have so few opportunities to fund raise these days.  Click HERE for more information and to sign up.

ROMAC Fundraising Luncheon

PDG Dr Dick is hoping the club will put together a table of 12 to support the terrific work ROMAC does.  It looks like an all inclusive, fun event with a 75 minute set by  the 14 piece Brilliant Brass!.  Bring your friends!

Let Dick know if you would like to attend and how many seats to reserve.

Grants and Working with Council Information Session

The Mt Barker Council is holding a seminar for community groups to familiarise them with the many sources of funding available  from the three levels of government and how to frame a request for support for worthy projects.

It would be great if every committee had someone there to learn what funds might be available to support their projects and initiatives, and more importantly, how to frame an application to increase the chances of receiving a grant.

The seminar is FREE and will be held on Tuesday, 27 July 2021 from 3:30 – 6.00PM at the Hahndorf Bowling Club
43a Church Street, Hahndorf, SA 5245.

This Week's Challenge

Again, no winners in the "What caused this injury?" challenge.

Suggestions ranged from jellyfish stings to sunbathing under a leafless tree on a sunny day in winter, but no one guessed the real cause.

It was not the sun,  but the cause DID come from above.  In fact it was a lightning strike!

The unlucky/lucky (choose one)  woman survived and the burn marks eventually healed, but, no doubt, some emotional scars remained...

Here's an easier one...

How long has this monster roamed the deep blue sea?  (Come on, everyone can have a crack at this!)

A "winner" is guaranteed because bragging rights and all the public acclaim will go to the one who guesses the closest!

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
